Driving Towards a Net Zero Emissions Future
Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption is picking up pace within the passenger vehicle market in Australia, driven by an increasing focus on emissions reduction and rapid escalation in climate change impacts. As an interim step towards a net-zero emissions future, numerous businesses are already switching to hybrid options which can help reduce CO2 emissions by 30% – 40% on average, while the EV market in Australia matures gradually. Potential government support in the near future should drive EV adoption further.
Across metropolitan locations, a wide range of electric vehicles are now available for trial and use by operators to assess their suitability.
Compass Group recently introduced their first official EV to their fleet in late 2023, with more vehicles currently undergoing trials and tests before being rolled out as part of the fleet. This includes the new Peugeot E-partner utility van, with or the new BYD Atto 3-passenger car.
Even within the heavy commercial space, “around the town” last-mile delivery applications and long-distance line haul EV trials are in the works. A developing area within the EV space is its potential application within heavy-duty, off-road, harsh mining environments.
Some manufacturers are also looking into Hydrogen vehicles to tackle the challenges of remote vehicles. This includes Toyota, who is developing a new Hydrogen Hilux as part of an ongoing trial, hoping to launch it within its main production in the coming years, and Honda working on a new Hydrogen CRV.
Hydrogen vehicles, whilst not as environmentally friendly as EVs in their current form, can offer a longer driving range and a significantly lower refuelling time. The emissions stem from the production of the Hydrogen fuel, however, the cars themselves only release water vapour from their tailpipes.
The Australian market is currently developing the amount of hydrogen refuelling stations available across all states, to ensure that this becomes a viable option once the vehicles start to enter Australia.
Overall, EVs and hydrogen vehicles continue to see tremendous focus, investment and innovation from large and small OEMs alike, especially in international markets more open to EV and Hydrogen adoption.
